Hematite

Science & Origin of Hematite

Hematite is an iron oxide mineral with the chemical formula Fe₂O₃. Its name derives from the Greek word for blood, referencing its characteristic red streak when scratched. It occurs in several forms: metallic silver-grey specular hematite, earthy red ochre, botryoidal, reniform and massive specimens. It has a Mohs hardness of 5–6 and a notably high density, so it feels much heavier than crystals of the same size. Hematite forms in sedimentary deposits, hydrothermal veins and banded iron formations. It is the primary ore of iron. Major mining locations include Brazil, England, South Africa, the United States, Australia and China. Polished metallic hematite is widely made into tumbled stones, palm stones and jewellery.
