Howlite
Science & Origin of Howlite
Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral, with the chemical formula Ca₂B₅SiO₉(OH)₅. It is most recognised for its creamy white, porcelain-like base marked with thin, grey or black branching veining. It measures 3.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it relatively soft and susceptible to scratches, so it requires careful handling. Howlite commonly forms in nodular, cauliflower-like masses; well-formed crystals are rare. It grows within evaporite deposits. A well-known fact: porous howlite is frequently dyed to imitate turquoise. Major deposits are found in Canada, the United States, Mexico and Turkey.
