Lapis Lazuli

Science & Origin of Lapis Lazuli

Lapis Lazuli is an opaque metamorphic rock, not a single mineral. Its main component is lazurite, accompanied by calcite (white streaks) and pyrite (brassy golden flecks). The rich royal blue colour comes from sulfur within the lazurite crystal structure. It rates 5–5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it is relatively soft and needs careful handling. It forms in limestone deposits altered by contact metamorphism. Lapis Lazuli has been treasured since ancient times. The most famous and highest-quality source is Afghanistan; other deposits are found in Chile, Russia, Myanmar and the United States. For centuries, it was ground into pigment to create the expensive ultramarine paint used by Renaissance artists.
