Science & Origin of Labradorite

Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar mineral, a calcium sodium aluminosilicate. It is famous for its spectacular optical phenomenon called labradorescence — vivid flashes of blue, gold, green and violet light that dance across its surface when viewed from different angles. This shimmer comes from the internal lamellar crystal layering that refracts light. It has a Mohs hardness of 6–6.5, with a vitreous to pearly luster. The base stone is usually dull grey, and the striking colour flashes only appear once polished. It forms in mafic igneous rocks such as basalt and gabbro. Major sources are Labrador in Canada, Madagascar, Finland, Norway, Russia and Australia. It is widely cut into palm stones, pendants, tumbled stones and slabs.
