Science & Origin of Fluorite

Fluorite, also spelled fluorspar, is a calcium fluoride mineral with the chemical formula CaF₂. It crystallises in the cubic system and displays perfect octahedral cleavage. It has a Mohs hardness of only 4, making it relatively soft; it scratches easily and should be kept away from harder crystals and heavy wear jewelry. Fluorite is well-known for its vivid banded colour variations, including purple, green, blue, yellow, clear and rainbow multi-colour specimens. Its colouring comes from natural mineral impurities and radiation exposure during formation. Many fluorite pieces exhibit fluorescence under ultraviolet light, which is where the mineral gets its name. It forms in hydrothermal veins, often alongside quartz, calcite and barite. Major deposits are found in China, Mexico, the UK, USA, Brazil and South Africa.
