Blue Goldstone, also known as Blue Sandstone, is a man-made glass crystal, not a naturally occurring mineral. It is crafted from silica glass infused with countless tiny copper or cobalt flecks, which create its signature shimmering, starry sparkle. The deep royal blue base colour comes from cobalt oxide added during the melting process. It has a Mohs hardness of 5.5–6. The glittering effect forms when metallic platelets suspend evenly within the glass matrix as it cools. Goldstone was first discovered by accident in 17th-century Italy by Venetian glassmakers. Today, most Blue Goldstone is produced in China and India. It is widely cut into tumbled stones, pendants, palm stones and carvings.
