Bloodstone, also known as Heliotrope, is a dense cryptocrystalline variety of chalcedony within the quartz family. Its base is deep green jasper, dotted with vivid red speckles and flecks. The green colour comes from chlorite or amphibole mineral inclusions, while the iconic red spots are composed of iron oxide (hematite). It registers 6.5–7 on the Mohs hardness scale, with a smooth, waxy to vitreous luster. Major sources include India, Brazil, Australia, Madagascar, South Africa and the United States. Bloodstone forms in sedimentary and metamorphic rock environments when silica-rich fluids permeate host rock, trapping iron deposits as the stone solidifies.
